Born in Swellendam in the Western Cape in 1942, he spent most of his youth in Bellville, matriculating at Bellville High School in 1959. In 1960 he joined the South African Air Force, training as a pilot on piston and jet aircraft, and later flying Sabres and Mirages in fighter squadrons. Rising through the ranks, he commanded an air base, directed major projects, and earned a BMil degree from the University of Stellenbosch, and an MBL from the University of South Africa.
